As the year comes to a close, I’m reflecting on the books that truly captivated me in 2024. There’s nothing quite like that can’t-put-it-down feeling—when you’re sneaking in pages between chores, staying up too late, or just getting lost in another world. Here’s a roundup of my favorite 5-star reads this year, each one unforgettable in its own way.
1. The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix

This book was such a wild ride! Imagine a small Southern town, a book club of unassuming suburban moms, and a new neighbor who may or may not be a vampire. It’s quirky, dark, and full of tension. The story also dives into themes of friendship, community, and the strength it takes to stand up for what’s right—wrapped up in a truly creepy mystery. If you’re into horror with a side of Southern charm, this one’s a must.
2. We Used to Live Here by Marcus Kliewer

This thriller had me hooked. The story follows a woman returning to her childhood home, only to find it’s been transformed into an unsettling mystery. As past and present blur, Kliewer masterfully weaves suspense and nostalgia. I couldn’t stop flipping pages, desperate to uncover what was real and what wasn’t.
3. The God of the Woods by Liz Moore

This book completely swept me away with its eerie atmosphere and gripping storytelling. Set in a small, secluded town surrounded by dense, mysterious woods in the Adirondacks, this story is about a teenager who mysteriously disappears from her families summer camp. If you love books that feel like modern myths, this one is an absolute must-read.
4. Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt

This book made my heart so happy! It’s a sweet, emotional story about an elderly woman who strikes up an unexpected friendship with an octopus at her local aquarium. Yes, you read that right. It’s quirky and tender, but also deals with loss, healing, and the surprising ways we connect with others (even if they have eight arms).
5. The Guest List by Lucy Foley

A murder mystery set at a wedding on a remote island? Say no more. This was twisty, chilling, and absolutely binge-worthy. Foley creates such rich, flawed characters that I found myself second-guessing everyone’s motives. The setting alone deserves a star—it’s so atmospheric you can practically feel the storm rolling in.
6. Spells for Forgetting by Adrienne Young

Adrienne Young delivers pure magic in this mystery set on a remote island steeped in secrets and folklore. The story beautifully balances romance, betrayal, and the pull of the past. The way the setting came alive was incredible—full of misty woods and coastal vibes that felt like a character themselves.
7. Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J. Maas

The final installment in the Throne of Glass series left me an emotional wreck (in the best way). After following this crew for so many books, the stakes couldn’t have been higher, and Maas delivered everything. It’s packed with action, heart, and so much growth for these characters I’ve come to love. If you haven’t dived into this series yet, do yourself a favor and start.
These books each offered something special, whether it was heart-pounding suspense, lyrical storytelling, or characters who felt like friends. If you’re looking for a cozy thriller, a touch of magic, or an epic fantasy to sink into, I hope one of these finds its way onto your 2025 TBR!
